Alabama Auto Insurance - (AL)

When you own one or more vehicles in Alabama, you have responsibilities, according to state law, to keep your auto(s) insured to minimum levels as set by those laws. These liability laws are not unique to Alabama by any means – in fact, all 50 states have minimum liability insurance laws, and they vary from state to state. According to the Alabama Department of Motor Vehicles, all drivers must be covered by liability insurance - or an alternative - when operating a vehicle.

Insurance Guidelines When Buying Or Driving A Car In Alabama

  • All vehicle types must have minimum insurance: No matter what vehicle type you drive, from a moped to a large SUV, you are required to maintain a minimum of certain levels of insurance.
  • You must provide proof of insurance on demand: If you are pulled over by a state or local police officer, you must be able to provide authorized proof of insurance or suffer a fine and, if you can not later show proof in court for the time of the incident, suspension of your license and/or vehicle registration.
  • The minimum insurance coverage levels: In Alabama the minimum levels of coverage required are $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage.

Alternatives To Liability Insurance

The alternative to getting liability insurance at these levels required by state law include getting a motor vehicle liability bond or a deposit of cash in the amount of $50,000 with the state that you are willing to surrender as payment for damages or injuries in an accident for which you may be held liable. Keep in mind that the amounts listed here are for minimums in Alabama in order to satisfy the state laws – you may want to seriously consider purchasing insurance with greater limits than what the minimums require in order to protect yourself, especially if you are a homeowner. For example, an auto accident that is even moderately serious can easily run more than $25,000 in total doctors and hospital bills during recovery for a single person. Your insurance policy at the minimums would cover $25,000 of that, potentially leaving you exposed and legally liable to come up with whatever excess there is - through a lawsuit if necessary.
